Tanking Sets

Akaviri Dragonguard

Level of use: Beginner

Armor type: Heavy

Types of drops: Armor, Weapons, Jewels

Drop location: Eastmarch

The Akaviri Dragonguard is an easy set to get and an easy set to use. Its armor type is heavy meaning that wearing it will not affect your resistances a lot.

The first bonusses are quite tanky which is nice, but this set is ultimately used for the 15% ulti cost reduction on the five piece bonus. This pairs well with the war horn, especially since the Dragonknight's Battle Roar passive scales of initial ultimate cost so you will be getting back resources as if the ultimate would have cost 250 ultimate points, eventhough you can cast it earlier due to the ultimate reduction set bonus.

An easy set for beginners to aquire and use.

Blood Spawn

Level of use: Intermediate

Armor type: Light, Medium, Heavy

Types of drops: Head, Shoulder

Drop location: Spindleclutch II / Undaunted Keys

The Blood Spawn is your go to monster set for a main tank. The first bonus, stamina recovery is not that interesting, but the second bonus makes up for that.

The resistances are nice, but what we are ultimately after is this 15 ultimate points we can get when taking damage. Now 6% chance to proc does not seem like a lot, but it procs of literally everything including DOT effects.

With this set you will get your ultimate a whole lot faster, meaning more resources for you when you can cast it. It also helps you keep up with templars in the war horn rotation, as they have reduced ultimate costs passively.

Brands of Imperium

Level of use: Intermediate

Armor type: Heavy

Types of drops: Armor, Weapons, Jewels

Drop location: White-Gold Tower

Not widely used, but interesting nevertheless. This set is especially useful if your group is not struggling with damage, but rather with survivability. The damage shield it gives procs quite often and is quite big. It can save quite a few lives in a fight where there is a lot of overal damage, like Rakkhat.

This set drops in heavy armor, but also jewels and weapons since the OneTamriel patch. Making it compatible with a lot of combanitions which adds viability to this set.

Ebon Armory

Level of use: Advanced

Armor type: Heavy

Types of drops: Armor, Weapons, Jewels

Drop location: Crypt of Hearts I

One of the most important support sets in a trial. No matter what the setup, one person (tank) should always be wearing this set. It adds 1k health to all group members, which is crucial for those that do not use Twice Born Star or for stamina damage dealers that wear 7 medium armor.

In many fights this set is the difference between life and death for many people. It has to be present.

Hist Bark

Level of use: Beginner

Armor type: Light, Medium, Heavy

Types of drops: Armor, Weapons

Drop location: Craftable -> Greenshade

This set is particularly useful for those that are starting to tank or those that do not have a lot of trust in their healers. This set has tanky stats and besides that grants you major evasion at all times (if you block that is). Meaning that theoretically you will automatically dodge one in every 5 hits.

It is craftable, so easy to aquire. And even for the pro's it can have its uses. For instance at the Warrior in Hel Ra Citadel this set can save your life if your healers is having a bad day.

Lord Warden

Level of use: Beginner

Armor type: Light, Medium, Heavy

Types of drops: Head, Shoulders

Drop location: Imperial City Prison / Undaunted Keys

A set commonly used by main tanks with less experience, but with other uses as well. This set is especially handy for off-tanks that are standing in the group during certain fights. For instance at Rakkhat. When this set procs in the melee group of your team it will buff these people quite nicely.

Do not underestimate these 4k resistances, especially with a proc chance of 50%. This set, when used, basically always procs.

Mephala's Hand

Level of use: Intermediate

Armor type: Heavy

Types of drops: Armor, Weapons, Jewels

Drop location: Cradle of Shadows

Not widely used, but that is more due to its drop rate than anything else. The stats on this set are really tanky, and next to that it applies a nice armor and spell resistance debuf to the enemy.

Now you might be asking "This is minor fracture, isn't there some other way to get this?". And I will tell you, yes, yes there are other ways. One of these ways is the Snipe skill, but no self respecting stamina player uses snipe in PVE. The other option would be Power of the Light from a stamina templar, but since stamina templars are the weakest damage class overal they are not widely used.

This set is a nice way to provide minor fracture in another way.

Mighty Chudan

Level of use: Advanced

Armor type: Light, Medium, Heavy

Types of drops: Head, Shoulder

Drop location: Ruins of Mazzatun / Undaunted keys

This set is only interesting in fights where you do not need to play very defensive. You can use this set to drop hardened armor off your bar and slot Stalwart Guard instead in order to give one of your damage dealers 100% Minor Force uptime.

Powerful Assault

Level of use: Master

Armor type: Medium

Types of drops: Armor

Drop location: Imperial City Boxes

A difficult set to obtain and at least as difficult to use. This is one of the sets I added to the "Master" difficulty. It comes in medium armor and at the moment has no jewels or weapons. Meaning that when you wear this set you will be using at least five medium armor pieces.

This is not a main tank set. You will not survive. This set is meant for off-tanks who use a lot of vigor. It procs of Assault abilities, and vigor is one of them.

When used right and regularly this set is an immense damage buff to your entire group. But beware, it is very difficult to use.

Roar of Alkosh

Level of use: Master

Armor type: Medium

Types of drops: Armor, Weapons, Jewels

Drop location: Maw of Lorkhaj

A set for both main tanks and off-tanks, but with no real tanky stats. The five piece bonus however applies a unique armor and spell resistance debuf to enemies when you use a synergy. Which is great since it stacks with everything but itself.

The reason I put this in the "Master" category is because of the uptime. You need to look when you use synergies to make sure the uptime is optimal. Other than that the set has medium armor, so be careful when making combinations.

The most professional and most daring of off-tanks use Alkosh in combination with Powerful Assault. Eliminating all their tankiness for support.

Sentinel of Rkugamz

Level of use: Advanced

Armor type: Light, Medium, Heavy

Types of drops: Head, Shoulders

Drop location: Darkshade Caverns I / Undaunted Keys

Extremely underrated at the moment, and in my opinion extremely powerful for an off-tank to use. This set procs a lot, and while the cooldown is pretty high it still provides a lot of resources to a lot of people.

I have tanked in groups where the off-tank was using this set and I basically had to do nothing at all to keep my stamina from running out. This set is, when used right, absolutely overpowered.

Tava's Favor

Level of use: Advanced

Armor type: Light, Medium, Heavy

Types of drops: Armor, Weapons

Drop location: Craftable -> Hew's Bane

A set that is according to me not needed in a well coordinated trial group, but might come in handy for those of you that are not that familiar yet with war horn rotations.

When used in combination with the medium armor skill Elude it will grant you a lot of ultimate regeneration. Which is nice because it will allow you to do a lot of war horns and also get a lot of resources back.

The reason I stopped using this set is because my team has a fixed war horn rotation that involves two healers and two tanks. I was gaining way more ultimate than needed before it was finally my turn to use the horn. Ultimately making me decide to not use this set anymore as all the ultimate generated over the actual cost of the ultimate abvility is wasted.

Werewolf Hide

Level of use: Intermediate

Armor type: Medium

Types of drops: Armor, Weapons, Jewels

Drop location: Glenumbra

A set the gives you ultimate when you get hit with a small cooldown. Effectively this set gives you five ultimate per five seconds, which is quite a lot. This set contains medium armor, which means you can use it instead of the Akaviri Dragonguard if you want to keep your undaunted bonusses.

It is easy to get and therefore a nice set to start with.
