Horns of the Reach: Shield Expert changes

PTS patch 3.1.3 has just been released. One of the patch notes has an impact on Tanks, on our shields (as in armour) specifically. Below I will explain what this means.

First of all let us take a look at how it works at the moment (Morrowind patch). The lady tree gives you 75% extra armor on your shield if you have 30cp invested. Here is what it looks like:

Buffs

Armour value

None

1720

Reinforced

1995

Nirnhoned

2021

Shield Expert

3010

Shield Expert + Reinforced

3491

Shield Expert + Nirnhoned

3536

Now in the new Horns of the Reach patch they renamed Shield Expert to Bulwark. Also they changed its properties. It now grants a flat 1500 physical and spell resistance instead of 75% of the armour of your shield.

This makes the stats look like this:

Buffs

Armour value

None

1720

Reinforced

1995

Nirnhoned

2021

Bulwark

3220

Bulwark + Reinforced

3495

Bulwark + Nirnhoned

3521

All stats are gold cp160 shields.

What has changed?

The change is that reinforced no longer multiplies with the Bulwark passive. Meaning that the overall effectiveness of reinforced goes down, but combined with the new passive you still get more than you had before. Though the fact that the difference between Bulwark and Bulwark plus reinforced has become much smaller, one might reason that other traits on shields just became more viable compared to reinforced. And that assumption is correct.

So what is the verdict?

  • It is a buff if you have 30cp in the Lady and you are using a reinforced shield.
  • It is a buff if you have 30cp in the Lady and you are using a shield with a trait that is not reinforced or nirnhoned.
  • It is a nerf if you have 30cp in the Lady and you are using a nirnhoned shield.
  • If you have 30cp in the Lady nirnhoned shields still give the most armour value.
